Modern Danish Design by Skovby

by Katja on January 18, 2010

Danish Design, modern design, skovby, Danish dining room furniture

When it comes to Danish design, there has always been a few key elements; it is elegant, functional and timeless. Danish Skovby’s furniture combines all these three elements, and brings in flexibility for modern day living.

Danish Design, modern design, skovby, Danish dining room furniture

Skovby has been making furniture since 1933 and has grown from a small one-man workshop to a company selling their furniture around the world. While their production amounts have increased, their furniture is still today handcrafted and each piece is made of natural wood giving it it’s own characteristic. Functional modern design, skilled craftsmanship and natural materials are the key elements to Skovby’s design.

Skovby is famous for their dining room sets, and one of the best qualities is the flexibility of their dining tables. They are easy to turn from a romantic candle light dinner to a family dinner to a large gathering. See the pictures to get a better.. um, picture! Flexibility at it’s best.

And when it comes to modern day living Skovby has a few more surprises. The cupboards, sideboards, hutches and china cabinets come in so many different shapes and forms making it easy for you to match it to your room. The china cabinets come with trays and drawers to accommodate your things.

But wait… there is more. I saved the best for the last.

The Skovby TV and Hi-Fi cabinets come with smart technology they call Remote link. You can hide your electronics in the cabinet and the Remote Link transmits the signal from the remote control to nearly all infra red recipients like DVD, digital receivers, media centre, video and stereo equipment. You can just point your remote control to the Skovby logo, which is the Remote Link in the furniture, and you can control several different appliances. This is what I call modern design.

Danish Designer Spotlight: Rie Elise Larsen

by Katja on January 5, 2010

danish design, rie elise larsen, vintage inspired

When it comes to Scandinavian Design, there are distinctive looks in Swedish, Finnish and Danish design. Today I wanted to introduce one of the Danish designers, Rie Elise Larsen, who represents some of the cutest design from Denmark.

danish design, rie elise larsen, vintage inspired

Rie Elise Larsen creates everything from quilts to paper goods with modern graphics, which yet have a very vintage feel. Her delightful prints freshen any home, and in fact, women too - she turned some of her fabrics into accessories like scarves and purses. Her line extends to glass ware and lamps to compliment the collection of lampshades and other home goods.

Here is a quick look into her different prints. Which then turn into amazing products…

When it comes to her own home, Rie Elise Larsen combines modern design with vintage finds, and of course tops it off with her own designs. She believes in products that last from generation to generation, and she believes home is a place where everyone can relax. Her best decorating tip: combine modern and simplistic with nostalgic and romantic to get the Danish homey look. Here are some photos from her own home.

iPhone Apps for Home Decorators & IKEA Lovers

by Katja on December 3, 2009

This is a new IKEA catalog app for UK IKEA customers. The application just launched and it is in it’s first stage and still being developed. But I have to say, even though it is the UK version, and the prices are in pounds, as an IKEA junkie, I had to download it immediately. Just for inspiration you know. You never know when you need to check some inspiration or just cheap fix from your Swedish Scandinavian design copycat friends. And the app is free, so go and get it - it’s great for passing time while waiting the kids on the carpool line.

And after you’ve been eyeing the products long enough and take the step to actually to go to IKEA to purchase the products, download SwedeShop - Unofficial IKEA Shopping List app - it will help you to make notes where the furniture is located in the storage and helps you to create a budget and stay in the budget. Works in any IKEA around the world. I think it’s worth $0.99 to try!

One of the most popular iPhone apps for home decorators and interior designers alike is the Benjamin Moore paint color app. You can take a picture of any color inspiration and immediately match it to one of the more than 3,300 hues in the Benjamin Moore’s color system. You can save your favorites, and even compare and see if they work together.

Do you have a favorite iPhone app that you use?

Holiday Decorating & Gifts from Finnish Aarikka

by Katja on November 24, 2009

One of the best known Finnish decorative and gift item companies is Aarikka. Aarikka’s wooden Christmas elves are a collectible item everyone knows in Finland, and the company comes with a new elf design or two each year to keep the tradition going and collectors happy. Aarikka’s unique way of coloring wood makes them stand out and a Finnish design staple.

But Aarikka is so much more than Christmas elves - even for the holiday time. Their wooden angles and nativity sets are great for Holiday decorating your home with Scandinavian style.

The wooden Aarikka Pässi, the lamb, is another collectible to have. It comes in different colors and sizes. Aarikka has other fun animals in their decorative items as well, like Finnish native moose, and a funny duck.

Aarikka’s also has great glassware and I like their candle holders. Simplistic design, with high quality workmanship, handmade in Finland - Aarikka is truly a Finnish design house you should check out, if you like Scandinavian design.

Aarikka’s products are sold in some Scandinavian design special stores like FinnStyle.com, some at Amazon and at their own webshop Aarikka.com.

shopping in Helsinki, Finnish Design store, My o My, stores in Helsinki, shopping in Finland

Every time I speak with local New York store owners who sell Scandinavian design, I ask if they have ever been to Helsinki. Often they have, and they always say how impressed they are with the stores and how they merchandise their storefronts in Finland. I couldn’t agree more.

Helsinki might not be the most known European shopping destination, but it is full of hidden gems, especially for modern design lovers. One of these amazing places to shop in Helsinki, Finland, is My o My, which is a year old lifestyle store in the heart of Helsinki.

shopping in Helsinki, Finnish Design store, My o My, stores in Helsinki, shopping in Finland

My o My offers fashion, accessories, jewelry and what I love - interior design objects. They mainly import new-to-Finland brands from around the world. I love the mixture of fashion and design and in fact the entire store is a design showcase itself.

The interior designers Anna Katriina Tilli and Mikko Vesanen were inspired by the challenging shapes of the retail space and created interesting pleats, like in clothing, to the space itself. “We briefed them with only three guidelines: whiteness, women with their sweethearts and sigh My o My” says the owner Pauliina Louhiluoto. Looking at the photos… I can’t say anything else but “My o My”.

I spotted some great design from My o My’s website - above Dutch designer Frederik Roijé’s chandelier and shelving system and below Mint Inc.’s spice grinder and salt and pepper shakers.

I know you are already drooling and booking a trip to do some shopping in Helsinki, but just in case if you need more convincing, here is one more tidbit. I happen to know the owner, Pauliina (pictured in the middle), personally, and her taste in fashion and design are impeccable. If you visit My o My, make sure to say hello from me!

Holiday Decorating Ideas from Pentik of Finland

by Katja on November 10, 2009

I have traditionally only featured modern Scandinavian design, but Finnish Design is so much more than minimalism.

One great more traditional Finnish design company is Pentik. They have over 80 stores in Scandinavian countries, unfortunately their products are not sold in the US or online, and these pictures are only for inspiration.

Marimekko Holiday 2009

by Katja on November 9, 2009

As promised…. Here are some pictures from Marimekko’s Holiday 2009 Catalogue. All of the products haven’t come out yet, but here is a peek to this year’s modern Scandinavian table settings the Marimekko way.

marimekko fabric, Koreana fabric, purple marimekko fabric, Sanna Paananen for Marimekko
Koreana fabric by Sanna Paananen

taikamylly fabric, marimekko taikamylly, Sanna Annukka Taikamylly, Taikamylly in green and red, Marimekko Christmas fabric
Taikamylly fabric by Sanna Annukka

Lumimarja fabric, Marimekko lumimarja, Erja Hirvi, marimekko Holiday 2009
Lumimarja fabric by Erja Hirvi

The fabrics are just stunning, there are so many good ones to choose from. Just making a table cloth or hanging one of these fabrics on the wall would bring the Holiday season in to any modern home.

Marimekko Holiday 2009, Marimekko Christmas

One of my favorites is the Lumimarja print, the print is available in red, red and white and more neutral tone - as in the gift tin on the bottom of the picture, and also as white and red, like in the tea towel on the bottom left. Sanna Annukka’s Taikamylly fabric got new colors for the Holiday season - I absolutely love the color combination of the reds and green, reminds me of my childhood Christmases in Finland.

The Maribowl in black is festive and I would match that with the white Lumimarja (snow berry) fabric for contrast or with white Ananas (pineapple) fabric - like the stocking.

There are so many great gift ideas at Marimekko’s Holiday collection this year, that I don’t even know where to start. The tea towels and the trays have always been my favorites, and the new ones this year don’t disappoint. The Hevonen (horse) tea towel and the Kanteleen Kutsu tray are pictured.

Marimekko coffee mugs

Some great stores selling Marimekko:
FinnStyle - Remember to enter to win $100 Gift Card to FinnStyle.
Always Mod
Velocity Art and Design
And Amazon and Honfleur Home tend to have the lowest prices.

Modern Chairs With Every Budget

by Katja on November 7, 2009

Everyone can have a piece of modern design history in a form of a chair.

Ok, maybe not, but at least a product inspired by a designer chair. I wish I didn’t have to shop for knock-offs and designer inspired products, but original designs are not in my budget right now. When it comes to design, and especially to Scandinavian design, there are two places that are more shameless than others - IKEA and Target - you can find knock-offs of several famous designer furniture in both of the stores. Here is some history of a few of the most famous chairs from the past - and some products that are in everyone’s budget that remind us of the real thing.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Barcelona Chair, modern chair, Knoll Barcelona chair

German-American architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed the Barcelona Chair and Stool in 1929 for his German Pavilion at the International Exhibition in Barcelona. It became one of the key pieces in modern design, and it is still wildly popular. Mies van der Rohe designed the chairs for the king and queen of Spain, and the stool was meant for the attendants. The chair is still in production by Knoll and the real thing goes around $5,000.

Alvar Aalto, Aalto chair, Aalto pension chair, 406 Armchair

Finnish architect Alvar Aalto designed this cantilevered armchair for the Paimio Sanitarium in 1938-39. I need to write more about the Paimio Sanitarium in a later post; I happen to be from Paimio, and I just heard they are closing down the Alvar Aalto’s famous Sanitarium, and I may have to go back home to demonstrate or something to prevent that from happening.

But back to the chair… This chair is called the Pension Chair, even though Alvar Aalto designed it as the 406 Armchair. The 406 armchair is modeled after a similar type of chair made entirely of plywood - this one has woven cotton interlaced webbing as the seat and back making it more comfortable than the plywood version.

The chair is still in production by Finnish Artek and available in several stores in the US for around $1,600.

Eames, plywood lounge chair, herman miller

The Eames Lounge Chair Wood was designed by husband and wife team Charles and Ray Eames, in 1946 for the Herman Miller furniture company. The Eames Plywood Lounge Chair is probably the most famous of all of the designer chairs of the last century. It is designed with the real portions of human body in mind and the way the plywood is molded in the chair was a break through of the time. The chair has since been in production in several different materials and colors and is still today in production and available for $679.00 - $1,229.00 depending on the material and finish.

There is also a version of this same chair with metal legs and both versions are also copied by several companies and you can find a good quality shameless knock-offs for around 400 dollars, and then shameless copies even under 200 dollars.

modern chairs, scandinavian design, interior design, risom chair

The Risom Chair was designed by Danish Jens Risom in 1941. It reminds of the Alvar Aalto’s Lounge Chair from Artek, but Risom chair is great for smaller spaces like bedroom or hallway. Knoll still manufactures the chair, and it’s available in different colors for $770.

modern design, designer chair, Michael Arras

And then there is Michael Arras who graduated from the Oregon College of Art & Craft in 2007 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and started designing furniture from his home and sells it at Etsy. He took all this inspiration and started offering modern designer furniture that people can actually afford. Arras designed this Birch Plywoood Lounge Chair and sells it on Etsy for $499. I’m sure we will hear more of Michael Arras in the future.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Barcelona Chair, modern chair, Knoll Barcelona chair

And now a few knock-offs and designer chair inspired products… Regency Shop is a fabulous place to find copy cat products and reproduction items. Like this Ibiza chair on sale for $345 - Barcelona - Ibiza, who cares, right?

ikea

Like mentioned, the most inexpensive knock-offs can be found at Target and IKEA, the Poäng chair is $89 at IKEA.

Inhabit Living offers the whole history of chairs - in pillows. The chair pillows are $60 and come in different styles and colors. Great Holiday gift idea for anyone who likes modern design. Added bonus is that the pillow are eco-friendly - the pillows are made from 100% sustainable recycled polyester and handprinted and handmade in the USA with environmentally-friendly inks with no chemical waste or disposal generated.

I think this chair mobile by Salty and Sweet ($30) would make a great gift for any modern design lover. In fact, this is how I’d like to decorate even for Christmas - with beautiful chairs. I wonder if I could find some chair ornaments too…?

And just a little reminder on the wall - JennSki makes great prints of her original work for only $29. Frame it and keep on dreaming of buying the real thing one of of these days.
