I’ve always loved decorating with one of my favorite nature’s elements – the ocean and everything involving coastal living. I still have a pair of vintage rowing oars in my dining room corner, and in one of our houses I even used oars as curtain rods. There isn’t an easier way to get some summer in your home than adding seashells in a vase or using a real conch as a center piece in your dining table or in your bookshelf.
I still wonder why the house where I had Ralph Lauren’s wallpaper with sailboat blueprints took almost a year to sell. I don’t understand why everyone just wouldn’t love some seaside living in their living room…
If wallpaper with sailboat blue prints is too much for you, there are easy ways to get the coastal look in your home. Coastal Living has always been one of my favorite magazines for seaside inspiration, and for dreaming of ocean side living.

Great new addition to the blog. Love interior design! Just subscribed.
My main question (and something we are dealing with) is that the previous owner of our home split up the rooms in regards to flooring. There is a consistency of color (beige custom tile and carpet) to keep the eye moving visually but we love wood floors (dark wood at that). To start to add wood would mean breaking up brand new custom tile work to have it consistently in all the living areas without patching it in where there is carpet. Are there any solutions for the easiest way to go about adding wood floors when the living areas are broken up by tile walkways without a complete demo of tile flooring? Some have suggested adding light wood to keep the visual effect now in place but we love the darker wood as it matches our decor. HELP!
What is the right number of flooring types for one home? You may remember my house from your visit to Texas last summer……

I’m loving the “Coastal Decorating” style. To me it’s all about the basics and keeping things simple. How do you decorate and keep things elegant, simple, airy, and kid friendly at the same time?

Things I’m interested in learning about:
1) I love multiple types of design styles (rustic, chabby chic, coastal, cottage, etc) and would love to hear how you can blend different styles together to look cohesive
2) Ways to keep things organized that is still stylish

Subscribed. I’d love advice on what renters can do to improve their space — I’m often tempted to take paint to everything (including our severely distressed wood floors) and to re-tile the kitchen floor, but it seems a waste of money for a space we don’t own.
Congratulations, Katja! I love home decorating so much that I started a website, too. Skimbaco Home has such a fresh, clean, contemporary, and elegant appeal. I wish you much success in this new endeavor! ~Arleen
